Police services in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have published a joint cross-border policing strategy.
The cross-border initiative between the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and An Garda Síochána is designed to map out the approach the two forces will undertake from 2025-2027.
Speaking in County Cavan, PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris outlined key areas they plan to collaborate on.
These include ‘cross-border incidents’, ‘road safety’, and ‘victims and the vulnerable’.
Other topics which will be explored as part of the strategy are ‘partnerships in our communities’ and ‘wellness and work-life balance’.
The conference includes addresses from both the PSNI and the Garda, along with external expert speakers.
In 2023, a cross-border police operation was initiated in an attempt to tackle a rise in the number of road deaths on the island of Ireland.
As part of this operation, the the two forces conducted a joint checkpoint at the border between counties Donegal and Londonderry.
At the time, gardaí (Irish police) said the operation, at Bridgend, County Donegal, was the first of its kind between the two forces.
Ch Insp Graham Dodds, head of PSNI road policing, told BBC News NI the joint operation was all about deterring and detecting speeding.
