Newcastle thrashed Paris St-Germain 4-1 in the reverse fixture on 4 October

Newcastle’s match at Paris St-Germain will be the “defining moment” of the Magpies’ Champions League campaign, according to manager Eddie Howe.

His side must avoid defeat in the French capital on Tuesday to have any chance of reaching the last 16.

After consecutive losses to Borussia Dortmund the Premier League club are bottom of Group F in their first Champions League campaign for 20 years.

“We will need every ounce of energy to get a result,” said Howe.

“This is a defining moment in our Champions League campaign, we are going to give it everything. It is imperative we don’t lose.”

Howe’s side had looked well placed to qualify when they thrashed PSG 4-1 in their second Group F match at St James’ Park in early October.

But injuries have since affected their form with two losses to Dortmund leaving them heading towards European elimination.

Newcastle did return to winning ways in the Premier League with a 4-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday.

Newcastle’s injury list is lengthy.

Sven Botman, Dan Burn, Elliot Anderson, Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson are likely to remain sidelined for Tuesday’s fixture, while Howe confirmed Joe Willock “is seeing a specialist” and Sean Longstaff “has not travelled”.

One positive is the emergence of 17-year-old Lewis Miley, who started against Chelsea. The teenager “has every chance” of being involved at Parc des Princes, according to Howe.

“I think he is ready,” Howe added. “He has a great temperament for these occasions.

“The thing I loved about him after the game on Saturday, it was just another game for him. That is how he will need to approach this one.”

PSG are likely to be without teenager Warren Zaire-Emery who picked up an ankle injury while making his France debut last week.

Newcastle sit three points behind leaders Dortmund and two points off second-placed PSG in Group F.

They will be eliminated with a defeat on Tuesday because of their inferior head-to head record versus Borussia Dortmund. Newcastle will go second with one group fixture remaining if they manage to beat PSG.
