LIV Golf future: Martin Kaymer expresses doubts about circuit

Two-time major champion Martin Kaymer has said it is “highly unlikely” LIV Golf’s team championship will take place this year and admitted the players do not know if the circuit will exist in 2027.

LIV is reeling from the withdrawal of Saudi Arabian financial backing from the end of this season after the Kingdom ploughed in more than £3.75bn to bankroll its first three years.

Scott O’Neil, who became became LIV Golf chief executive in January 2025, is trying to generate $350m (£262m) of investment to keep the tour going.

The next LIV event starts at the JCB Club in Staffordshire on Thursday before tournaments in New York and Indianapolis prior to a scheduled team championship in Michigan.

“I know that Indianapolis is most likely happening,” said Kaymer, who is captain of the Cleeks team.

“There was a conversation on Wednesday: Michigan, highly unlikely. According to Wednesday, it didn’t look good.

“We were hoping for a bit more information [from the meeting]. We got the information but we were more looking for decisions or what is happening next year.

“Unfortunately, even Scott can’t tell us because he doesn’t know. It depends so much on the investors.”

LIV suffered a blow this week when it was announced that the PGA Tour and DP World Tour had agreed an alliance with the Asian Tour, which had been a partner of LIV.

O’Neil had identified national opens from around the world to play a part in a new LIV schedule and stops on the Asian Tour were considered central to that plan.

Kaymer, who holed the winning putt in the 2012 Ryder Cup, was candid in his response when asked if LIV had a future in 2027.

“Hopefully, I think there’s a lot of interest and it’s looking good. But we’ve all been there. If the signature is not there, then it doesn’t mean anything,” added the German.

“If those investors decide to pull out then we don’t play next year on LIV Golf.

“And if they decide to do it, then we have a chance.”

Meanwhile, LIV has agreed to pay $1m (£748,000) to settle a lawsuit brought by Stinger Golf, an Ohio-based golf tee manufacturer, over a trademark infringement.
