Ferrari: Enrico Cardile to leave role as chassis technical director

Former Ferrari technical director Enrico Cardile will join Aston Martin as chief technical officer in 2025.

The announcement from Aston Martin comes a day after Ferrari confirmed Cardile was leaving his role as Ferrari’s chassis technical director.

Aston Martin did not specify when next year Cardile would be joining the team.

The move was previously reported by BBC Sport when it was announced by Aston Martin that former Mercedes engine chief Andy Cowell would be joining them in October as chief technical officer.

Cardile’s recruitment is the latest signal of the determination of Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll to turn the team into a major force in Formula 1.

Stroll said the aim was to “reinforce the technical leadership team ahead of significant regulation changes in 2026”.

F1 is introducing new chassis and engine regulations together in 2026. Aston Martin start a new relationship with Honda as power-unit partner in the same season. The Japanese company currently supply world champions Red Bull.

Stroll added: “I am thrilled that we continue to attract world-class talent to our team.

“Enrico shares my motivation to be successful in F1 and will have all the resources available to him to realise that ambition.

“Together with Andy Cowell joining as Group CEO in October and our existing leaders we are creating a formidable team.”

Cardile said: “The ambition and desire (of Aston Martin) are clear and it is a unique opportunity to be part of that journey.

“This is a personal and professional challenge and I look forward to working with the team to bring success to this iconic brand.”

His decision comes as a blow to Ferrari, who are going through their own process of impreovement under team principal Frederic Vasseur.

Ferrari said in a statement announcing Cardile’s departure that Vasseur would take charge of the chassis design office “with immediate effect, and as an interim measure”.

Cardile’s departure coincides with – but is not related to – a difficult run of form for Ferrari, who at the British Grand Prix last weekend removed an upgrade from their cars that had been introduced two races previously in Spain.

Ferrari started the 2024 season as Red Bull’s closest challengers but have slipped behind McLaren and Mercedes in recent races.

Lewis Hamilton will join Ferrari from Mercedes at the end of the season.
