Two of the men’s team are no strangers to Games pain either.

Kyle Jimenez and Ross Malcolm lost in the bronze-medal game to New Zealand in Gold Coast in 2018, and again four years later against Canada.

They were not going to let their opportunity pass a third time.

New Zealand – who had beaten them in the round robin – were the opposition again, but the Scottish-born duo – and US-raised team-mates Skylar White and Owen McCormack – kept their shape in an angst-ridden contest to win 18-16.

“We needed to keep it interesting for you guys,” White, whose father is from Kilmarnock, told fans afterwards.

He added: “Towards the end, I told the guys ‘you can be hurt tomorrow, you can feel sore tomorrow, but right now it’s time to nut up and get it done’.”

McCormack, who qualifies through his Scottish mother, said the feeling of taking bronze ranked among the “top two… and it’s not two” in his life.

He also paid tribute to Malcolm and Jimenez, who have long been passionate advocates for the sport in Scotland as well as elite performers.

And that duo spoke movingly about what this success could mean in a wider sense.

“Coming into this we all believed we could get a medal as a team, but no one else thought anything of us – we proved the world wrong today,” Jimenez said.

Malcolm added: “Every time we play on an international stage we punch above our weight. Hopefully we get the coverage and the publicity that the sport deserves.”

Amid the joy, though, there was disappointment for the wheelchair men’s team, who lost their bronze-medal match to Canada 19-9.
