Britain’s Caroline Dubois has been upgraded to WBC lightweight champion after Katie Taylor opted to vacate the belt.

London’s Dubois, 23, outpointed Uruguayan Maira Moneo in August to win the interim championship and has previously called for a match-up with Taylor.

The Irishwoman, who defended her undisputed light-welterweight crown against Amanda Serrano last month, hasn’t fought at lightweight since 2022.

Dubois’ first defence of her belt will be against Canada’s Jessica Camara in Sheffield on 11 January.

“It’s always been my dream to become world champion and this is just the start of the journey for me,” said Dubois.

“I look forward to defending my WBC world title on 11January in Sheffield.”

The move mirrors how Dubois’ brother Daniel, 27, was upgraded to IBF heavyweight champion in June after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt.

Dubois has won all 10 of her pro fights, while January’s opponent Camara has won 14 bouts and lost four, including a defeat by WBO light-welterweight champion Kali Reis in 2021.

Promotor Ben Shalom believes Dubois will remain WBC champion for many years.

“We are only just starting to see Caroline’s true potential. We believe she will become the future face of women’s boxing,” said Shalom.
