Knife-edge Runcorn by-election

  • Reform UK won its first Parliamentary by-election, taking Runcorn and Helsby from Labour by just six votes after a recount
  • Reform candidate Sarah Pochin got 38.7% of the vote. The Conservatives came a distant third, with the Green Party fourth

First Reform mayors

  • Reform won its first mayoral contest, with former Tory MP Dame Andrea Jenkyns getting 42% of the vote in Greater Lincolnshire – a long way ahead of the Conservative candidate on 26%
  • The party gained its second mayor in Hull & East Yorkshire, where former boxer Luke Campbell got 36% of the vote, beating the Liberal Democrats into second place

Labour hold trio of mayoral contests

  • In North Tyneside Labour held the mayoralty by just 444 votes
  • It was also a tight result in Doncaster, with Labour clinching victory over Reform by 698 votes
  • Labour also held on in the West of England mayoral contest, with a majority of 5,949, as the Tories were pushed into fourth place behind Reform and the Greens
  • But the party saw its share of the vote fall significantly as Reform came a close second in all three races
  • Labour also lost the mayoralty in Cambridgeshire & Peterborough to the Conservatives – a rare bright spot for the Tories

Reform make council gains

  • Reform UK has made big gains in council seats across England and has picked up more than 650 seats
  • The Conservatives have lost more than 650 seats and Labour – which was defending fewer seats – is down by more than 180
  • For the first time Reform UK has won control of councils – they are now in charge in Derbyshire, Durham, Kent, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire – all except Durham were taken from the Conservatives
  • It also made gains in Devon, Cornwall, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Northumberland – areas where no party holds the balance of power

Lib Dem wins

  • The Liberal Democrats have boosted their overall number of seats by more than 150 so far, making gains in Devon, Cornwall, Hertfordshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire
  • They have taken control of Shropshire from the Conservatives and Oxfordshire and Cambridgeshire which were previously under no overall control
  • The party has won more seats than the Conservatives, pushing them into third place
  • The Green Party has made some gains, winning seats in Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, however it suffered disappointment in the West of England mayoral race where it came third to Reform UK and Labour

What’s still to come?

  • West Northamptonshire is still to declare
