Flames tore through the roof of the building at the junction of Scott Street and South Street

A firefighter who was hurt by falling masonry is among the casualties from a flat fire in Perth.

About 40 residents around Scott Street and South Street have been evacuated after the alarm was raised at 01:50.

Twelve crews were sent and worked through the night to extinguish the flames as well as deal with structural collapses.

The blaze broke out on the top floor of the four-storey building, which houses the Royal Bar on the ground floor. The roof has been completely destroyed.

Police have closed off Scott Street and South Street. People have been urged to avoid the area.

Four fire engines and one height resource remained at the scene at 10:00 to dampen down hot spots.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said several casualties had been passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

The evacuated residents were taken to the Salutation Hotel which is being used as a respite centre.

First Minister John Swinney, the MSP for Perthshire North, wrote on social media: “Very concerned to hear of a fire in Scott Street, Perth. Hope everyone is safe.”
