A school has paid tribute to a boy who drowned while on an end-of-year trip to the Lake District.

Abuzr Mirza, 16, from Burnley, Lancashire, drowned in the lake at Windermere on 24 July.

Darul Uloom Dawatul Imaan, the school he attended in Bradford, said the “tragic event” had a “profound effect” on the school community.

“Abuzr was a lovely pupil who touched the lives of many with his warmth and kindness,” a spokesperson said.

The school said it was cooperating with investigations by Cumbria Police and the Health and Safety Executive, which looks into the possible culpability of businesses in deaths and injuries.

An inquest into the circumstances of the teenager’s death is due to be opened by Cumbria Coroners Court on 13 August.

Abuzr’s father, Osman Beg, previously paid tribute to his son on Facebook.

“He was and still is a perfect son, I wish everyone is blessed with a son like my son,” he said in the post.

The Lake District National Park Authority confirmed the boy had been at the visitor centre at Brockhole on Windermere before entering the lake.

A search for the teenager began shortly after 17:00 BST and his body was found at about 23:45.

The school said everyone was “heartbroken” and the teenager would be “greatly missed”.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Abuzr’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” the spokesperson said.

“Our pupils and staff have come together in special assemblies and events to remember Abuzr and support one another.”
