{"id":20696,"date":"2025-10-05T16:53:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-05T16:53:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/wafcon-2026-next-years-finals-in-morocco-expanded-to-16-teams\/"},"modified":"2025-10-05T16:53:03","modified_gmt":"2025-10-05T16:53:03","slug":"wafcon-2026-next-years-finals-in-morocco-expanded-to-16-teams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/wafcon-2026-next-years-finals-in-morocco-expanded-to-16-teams\/","title":{"rendered":"Wafcon 2026: Next year&#8217;s finals in Morocco expanded to 16 teams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">The Women&#8217;s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals will expand from 12 to 16 teams starting from the 2026 edition, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) has announced.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Next year&#8217;s tournament in Morocco was set to have 12 competing sides, and qualifying for the finals has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/cdjydgn3700o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">reached the second and final round.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The expansion will likely require a third round of preliminaries to be played, with 11 remaining nations competing for four spots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Caf is expected to announce further details after discussions at its executive committee meeting being held in Kinshasa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wafcon was an eight-team tournament from its first edition in 1998 until the 2018 finals in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 2020 Wafcon was scrapped because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the competition returned with 12 sides in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Caf has invested in order to improve women&#8217;s football on the continent, with this year&#8217;s tournament in Morocco seeing a 45% increase in the overall prize pot to $3.45m (\u00a32.6m).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Champions Nigeria were handed $1m (\u00a3750,000) after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/c1kz3l823vdo\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">winning a record-extending 10th Wafcon title.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I am pleased with the progress we&#8217;ve made in women&#8217;s African football,&#8221; Caf president Patrice Motsepe said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Part of my starting point is making sure [men and women] are paid well and they can make a career out of football.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I can assure you women&#8217;s football will continue to improve because that is an area we are focussing on a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/c07p44r1z2zo?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Women&#8217;s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) finals will expand from 12 to 16 teams starting from the 2026 edition, the Confederation of African Football (Caf) has announced.
