{"id":17372,"date":"2025-07-22T01:19:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T01:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/lionesses-online-abuse-may-undermine-female-sport-participation\/"},"modified":"2025-07-22T01:19:21","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T01:19:21","slug":"lionesses-online-abuse-may-undermine-female-sport-participation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/lionesses-online-abuse-may-undermine-female-sport-participation\/","title":{"rendered":"Lionesses: &#8216;Online abuse may undermine female sport participation&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a letter seen by BBC Sport, Boardman warned: &#8220;This behaviour is abhorrent and unacceptable in any context, but it is especially disheartening given the progress we have made in championing women and girls in sport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Through Sport England and National Lottery investment, we have committed hundreds of millions of pounds to increase participation, visibility and opportunity for women and girls in sport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In October 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-68225707\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">the Online Safety Act<\/a> became law, ensuring social media platforms have a duty to protect users from content such as racism, with Ofcom responsible for enforcing the legislation, and developing codes of practice to guide tech companies. However, some anti-racism campaigners believe there needs to be more urgency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The Online Safety Act 2023 provides a framework to address illegal and harmful content, including hate speech and misogynistic abuse,&#8221; wrote Boardman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We are particularly interested in how the new codes can be used to address the kind of targeted abuse we are seeing.
