{"id":17189,"date":"2025-07-17T16:10:32","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T16:10:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/australia-v-british-and-irish-lions-team-news-will-boost-tourists-says-ugo-monye\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T16:10:32","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T16:10:32","slug":"australia-v-british-and-irish-lions-team-news-will-boost-tourists-says-ugo-monye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/australia-v-british-and-irish-lions-team-news-will-boost-tourists-says-ugo-monye\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia v British and Irish Lions: Team news will boost tourists, says Ugo Monye"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">The British and Irish Lions will have even &#8220;greater confidence&#8221; of beating Australia in the first Test after seeing the Wallabies&#8217; under-strength line-up, says Ugo Monye.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The tourists were favourites to win this summer&#8217;s three-match series, as they did on their last visit Down Under in 2013, but former Lions wing Monye says Andy Farrell&#8217;s side will be boosted by some notable absentees in the Australia XV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Australia head coach Joe Schmidt has named a team without experienced lock Will Skelton and powerful back row Rob Valetini, who both have calf injuries, for the opening Test in Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Without Skelton and Valetini, Australia are underpowered and it takes away some of their super strengths,&#8221; Monye, who toured South Africa with the Lions in 2009, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sounds\/play\/p0lqnlxj\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">told BBC Rugby Union Weekly<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The Lions were favourites before we even saw their squad. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Now we have seen their team and the Australian team, there is a greater sense of confidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The hosts have also handed rookie fly-half <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/cjelg5ykvd3o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Tom Lynagh, the son of Wallaby great Michael, a first Test start<\/a> in the absence of regular number 10 Noah Lolesio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Lions, meanwhile, have named a formidable line-up of Test stars, which includes a powerful back row and an all-Scotland midfield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Tom Curry has been selected at open-side flanker in the most hotly contested position, after fending off fierce competition from Jac Morgan and former world player of the player Josh van der Flier. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Monye added: &#8220;It has gone to Tom Curry and I&#8217;m thrilled for him and everyone that has been selected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Jac Morgan is probably the one out of everyone not selected to have every reason to be slightly miffed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Morgan has been superb and then you also have a former world player of the year with loads of experience. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Anyone who plays at seven is going to do a brilliant job, as you would expect on a Lions tour because you are dealing with the best of the best. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/rugby-union\/articles\/cvg4l31wdpyo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The British and Irish Lions will have even &#8220;greater confidence&#8221; of beating Australia in the first Test after seeing the Wallabies&#8217; under-strength line-up, says Ugo Monye.
