{"id":10628,"date":"2025-02-14T08:44:19","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T08:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/abdoulaye-doucoure-police-investigate-as-everton-and-liverpool-condemn-online-racist-abuse\/"},"modified":"2025-02-14T08:44:19","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T08:44:19","slug":"abdoulaye-doucoure-police-investigate-as-everton-and-liverpool-condemn-online-racist-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/abdoulaye-doucoure-police-investigate-as-everton-and-liverpool-condemn-online-racist-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Abdoulaye Doucoure: Police investigate as Everton and Liverpool condemn online racist abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Liverpool and Everton have jointly condemned online racist abuse received by Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, while Merseyside Police have opened an investigation.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Doucoure, 32, was targeted on social media following his side&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/live\/czd41jzgl66t\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">2-2 draw with Liverpool<\/a> in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Chief superintendent Claire Doyle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merseyside.police.uk\/news\/merseyside\/news\/2025\/february-2025\/appeal-following-report-of-racial-abuse-towards-everton-player-on-social-media\/\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Merseyside Police<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> said: &#8220;We have successfully prosecuted so-called fans for racist abuse and they have been handed football banning orders along with a criminal record for their behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;If you have any information in relation please let us know because it could help our ongoing enquiries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evertonfc.com\/news\/2025\/february\/13\/merseyside-clubs-condemn-racist-abuse\/\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">joint statement<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> by the clubs described the abuse as &#8220;reprehensible&#8221; and condemned it &#8220;in the strongest possible terms&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Together, the two clubs will work with Merseyside Police, who are conducting an investigation with the aim of identifying the individuals responsible,&#8221; the clubs said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We also encourage people who witness or experience online abuse to report and highlight it to the social media platforms on which it appears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We must all, including the social media companies, take a zero-tolerance stance. Platforms need to take accountability and action to ban such abusers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Racism and hate has no place online, in our stadiums or in our communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Premier League has also issued a statement in support of Doucoure, saying it was &#8220;appalled&#8221; by the abuse he had received. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We join Everton and Liverpool in strongly condemning this abhorrent abuse and have offered our full support to Abdoulaye and the club,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/premierleague\/status\/1890055853518254261\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">said the Premier League<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We are working with the relevant social media companies and authorities to help ensure that any individuals identified and found guilty of discrimination face the strongest possible consequences, including club bans and legal prosecution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Football is for everyone and there is no place for discrimination in our game or anywhere in society.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Doucoure&#8217;s online racial abuse follows recent cases involving England defender Kyle Walker, Newcastle United&#8217;s Joe Willock and Manchester City&#8217;s Khadija Shaw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a recent interview with BBC Sport, Samuel Okafor, chief executive of anti-discrimination body Kick It Out (KIO), said the level of abuse in English football had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/football\/articles\/c3rw0v1y4v4o\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">&#8220;reached crisis point&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Doucoure will miss Everton&#8217;s Premier League match against Crystal Palace on Saturday (17:30 GMT) through suspension.
