{"id":10145,"date":"2025-02-02T18:25:36","date_gmt":"2025-02-02T18:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/formula-1-auction-record-42-75m-for-mercedes-driven-by-stirling-moss-and-juan-manuel-fangio\/"},"modified":"2025-02-02T18:25:36","modified_gmt":"2025-02-02T18:25:36","slug":"formula-1-auction-record-42-75m-for-mercedes-driven-by-stirling-moss-and-juan-manuel-fangio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/sport\/formula-1-auction-record-42-75m-for-mercedes-driven-by-stirling-moss-and-juan-manuel-fangio\/","title":{"rendered":"Formula 1 auction record: \u00a342.75m for Mercedes driven by Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A Mercedes &#8216;streamliner&#8217; raced by Formula 1 legends Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio has sold for a record \u00a342.75m (\u20ac51.155m) at auction.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The silver W196 R Stromlinienwagen was driven by Argentina&#8217;s five-time F1 champion Fangio as he won the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Britain&#8217;s Moss piloted the car at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza the same year, setting the fastest lap at an average speed of 134mph before retiring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Silver Arrow was sold by RM Sotheby&#8217;s at the Mercedes museum in Stuttgart, Germany, on behalf of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), and becomes the most expensive grand prix car ever sold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The previous record was held by another ex-Fangio Mercedes W196 from 1954 that went for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-sussex-23275089\" class=\"ssrcss-k8mrr8-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">\u00a319.6m<\/a> after commission and taxes at Goodwood in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The W196 R, one of only four in existence, had an estimated price of more than \u20ac50m with the final hammer going down at \u20ac46.5m.
