In 2001, the BBC conducted a unique social experiment by sending 55 volunteers across the Pacific Ocean aboard an 18th-century-style sailing ship. Cut off from the modern world, the crew had no internet, television, mobile phones, or regular contact with the outside world, experiencing life much as sailors did centuries ago.
While the expedition was at sea, the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks occurred in the United States. When reliable communication finally reached the vessel, the captain gathered the crew and informed them of the attacks. Because of their isolation, the participants were among the last groups of people to learn about 9/11, creating one of the most memorable moments of the BBC documentary.
The experiment highlighted the dramatic contrast between life before and after the age of instant global communication. The crew’s delayed awareness of one of the most significant events of the 21st century remains a powerful reminder of how rapidly information now travels—and how unusual true isolation has become.
