Imports by value also declined sharply over the same period, down 31% to $752m (\u00a3565m).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But according to Janet Wang, author of The Chinese Wine Renaissance, it&#8217;s unlikely to account for the entire change, because most stores and distributors would have had months worth of existing imported stock. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Instead, she thinks the shift is about Chinese producers being savvy enough to sense an opportunity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Anecdotally, you do hear people saying &#8216;we&#8217;re seeing a lot more promotions around Chinese wine, or a lot of distributors are taking up Chinese wine, or inquiring about Chinese wine&#8217;,&#8221; says Ms Wang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">For many years, expats in China <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-23943693\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">turned up their nose at the local wines<\/a>, and as recently as five years ago one Chinese executive even candidly admitted his company&#8217;s wines were <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/388633\/the-head-of-chinas-biggest-wine-brand-admits-its-wines-are-terrible\/\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">&#8220;not very good&#8221;<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-55226201?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=KARANGA\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One possible reason, he thinks, is that people switched because imported wine simply became trickier to find due to the pandemic.
