Well, the cloud is somebody else&#8217;s computer,&#8221; he explains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">And cloud bursts are not uncommon. Amazon Web Services, the largest cloud provider in the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-59568858\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">suffered a partial outage<\/a> in December 2021, affecting thousands of customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Plus, cloud services sometimes get turned off, just like Gridhost. Google is <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/08\/17\/google-cloud-will-shutter-its-iot-core-service-next-year\/?guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAG-APvwZluXmOUAIN6JAUt_-PZSyBBVvpMHkHf8v_wnqEbDXVCDACelH40-faJ0I1GYg1gLGpOa7tIWoOR8FQH58m3vyZul_GtlBH-ZCLfCPP1aXFfv0DoSA03R4k2CCwEClKSFuR5-Jv3cCkirevnjq7usJKp2wSU-O6ZJXMvTy&amp;guccounter=2\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">retiring its cloud platform IoT Core<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> this August. People have used it to connect smart home devices, among other things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uptimeinstitute.com\/about-ui\/press-releases\/2022-outage-analysis-finds-downtime-costs-and-consequences-worsening\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Data from the Uptime Institute<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>, an advisory organisation, suggests that while the cloud is not getting significantly less reliable overall, high-cost outages are becoming more common. &#8220;Over 60% of failures result in at least $100,000 (\u00a382,000) in total losses, up substantially from 39% in 2019,&#8221; the Institute says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Cloud computing is increasingly popular with companies, says Kristina McElheran at the University of Toronto. She and colleagues conduct regular, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w28290\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">large-scale surveys<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> of hundreds of thousands of firms in the US.
