{"id":6701,"date":"2024-08-07T08:47:25","date_gmt":"2024-08-07T08:47:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/renewable-energy-targets-will-be-missed-consultants-say\/"},"modified":"2024-08-07T08:47:25","modified_gmt":"2024-08-07T08:47:25","slug":"renewable-energy-targets-will-be-missed-consultants-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/renewable-energy-targets-will-be-missed-consultants-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Renewable energy targets will be missed, consultants say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Northern Ireland and Ireland will miss their 2030 renewable energy target by at least two years, a leading consultancy firm has forecast.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Cornwall Insight says just 70% of the grid will be using renewable sources by 2030, rather than the 80% goal both jurisdictions have set.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But it adds that significant progress has been made, with the Single Electricity Market having the highest contribution of wind generation of any power system in the world.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Northern Ireland had 45.8% of <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-northern-ireland-68030580\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">electricity generated from renewable sources<!-- --><\/a> in 2023, while Ireland had 42%.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The forecasters say renewable generation will reach 82% in 2032, but delays in planning and a shortage in grid connections will play a part in slowing down the renewables transition.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And these have been \u201csignificant barriers\u201d to generators submitting bids in the Republic\u2019s Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS) auction.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">That resulted in just three successful onshore wind projects last year.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Kitty Nolan, Energy Modeller at Cornwall Insight, said that, without addressing the \u201csystemic challenges\u201d in the renewables development process, the energy goals will remain out of reach.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWhile some may argue that the delay won&#8217;t have a significant impact, Ireland\u2019s continued reliance on insecure imports exposes us to global market disruptions, which could drive up prices, while our dependence on fossil fuel generated power is delaying our progress toward achieving net zero.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cIt&#8217;s crucial that we streamline these planning processes and invest in grid infrastructure to meet our climate commitments.
