{"id":63332,"date":"2026-10-23T13:43:42","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T13:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/brazilian-election-lula-seeks-bolsonaros-disqualification-over-alleged-meta-interference\/"},"modified":"2026-10-23T13:43:42","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T13:43:42","slug":"brazilian-election-lula-seeks-bolsonaros-disqualification-over-alleged-meta-interference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/brazilian-election-lula-seeks-bolsonaros-disqualification-over-alleged-meta-interference\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazilian election: Lula seeks Bolsonaro&#8217;s disqualification over alleged Meta interference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b>Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva&#8217;s campaign has requested the disqualification of right-wing challenger Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c6wyz0r2n0djo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\"><b>in the lead up to the final round of the presidential election<\/b><\/a><b> on Sunday over alleged interference by social media company Meta.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a petition filed to the country&#8217;s top electoral court on Wednesday, the leftist incumbent president accused Meta, the tech giant behind Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook, of limiting its content to boost Bolsonaro&#8217;s campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In response, Bolsonaro filed a petition seeking to disqualify Lula over what he said was the mass dissemination of government posts on WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The company has denied the campaigns have been treated unequally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It comes after UN experts said on Wednesday that they were concerned about reports of discrepancies in the ability of each campaign to reach voters on Meta&#8217;s platforms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A report led by the UN&#8217;s special rapporteur on freedom of expression said Meta must ensure a level playing field online during the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It cited incidents including &#8220;temporary interruptions of one candidate&#8217;s campaign account; differences in audience engagement, user feeds, view counts and reach; restrictions on that campaign&#8217;s Instagram posts&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Information, including from Meta employees, suggests that accounts linked to one side of the presidential race were disproportionately curtailed,&#8221; it read. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Meta has denied taking action to favour one side of the election and has said it would comply with an order from a Brazilian court to treat Bolsonaro and Lula equally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lula&#8217;s campaign had previously filed a complaint alleging that accounts and content related to Bolsonaro were boosted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Users also reported that Meta&#8217;s artificial intelligence tools were not generating images related to Lula.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c6pwgve2lk5go?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva&#8217;s campaign has requested the disqualification of right-wing challenger Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro in the lead up to the final round of the presidential election on Sunday over alleged interference by social media company Meta.
