Hills, who helps artists with their vocals, says vaping can have an impact on an artist’s voice and struggling to breathe can risk straining your voice.

“Vaping may not affect the voice box just itself, it affects the lungs, the airways, the throat – it’s all respiratory, it’s all connected. So doing that can affect your vocal technique,” she says.

“Breathing is really important. Singing requires controlled inhalation and sustained, efficient exhalation.

“You end up trying harder, putting in more effort for the same results you were getting beforehand.”

She adds that when artists struggle with their voice, it can have significant psychological impacts on them too.

“They can feel like they’ve lost themselves,” she says. “It can become quite a big deal emotionally.”

Overall, she wouldn’t recommend vaping to her clients.

“As a performer, as an artist, you want to stay in the best health you can for your voice to work at its best.

“We all know it’s not the healthy choice and if you can avoid it – absolutely.”
