{"id":59642,"date":"2026-08-29T02:28:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T02:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/andy-burnham-says-he-will-not-vote-on-assisted-dying-unlike-starmer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-29T02:28:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T02:28:17","slug":"andy-burnham-says-he-will-not-vote-on-assisted-dying-unlike-starmer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/andy-burnham-says-he-will-not-vote-on-assisted-dying-unlike-starmer\/","title":{"rendered":"Andy Burnham says he will not vote on assisted dying unlike Starmer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Prime Minister Andy Burnham has revealed he will not vote on the assisted dying bill for England and Wales unlike his predecessor Sir Keir Starmer.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">MPs are likely to get the chance to debate and vote on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill in two weeks&#8217; time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The bill is identical to the one put to Parliament last year, where it passed in the House of Commons but stalled in the Lords after an unprecedented number of amendments meant it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c78vv47x422o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">ran out of time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Burnham said he has his &#8220;own personal views on the issue&#8221; but it was &#8220;a matter for Parliament to decide&#8221;. Starmer voted in favour of the previous bill when he was PM but did not campaign in favour of it, remaining officially neutral.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Writing to Labour MPs on Friday, Burnham said: &#8220;My role, as the prime minister, will be to lead a government that implements the will of Parliament in this area \u2013 whether that is to change the law or not.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I also do not want to unduly influence the debate as prime minister and for every colleague to know it is a genuinely free vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;For these reasons, I have taken the decision that it is most appropriate for me not to vote at Second Reading.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added that &#8220;there is no single right position&#8221; and it was an &#8220;incredibly important and personal debate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It is vital that those different views are treated with dignity and respect,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">While his abstension is a departure from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cy0857z0v5no\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Starmer&#8217;s support<\/a>, Burnham stressed that the government as an entity would officially remain neutral on the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">When he was Greater Manchester mayor, Burnham indicated he was in favour of assisted dying in principle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But in June he suggested it would be challenging to implement before social and palliative care were improved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The assisted dying law would allow adults over the age of 18 who are expected to die within six months to be given help to end their own life, subject to certain safeguards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c1dlp27gre5o?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Andy Burnham has revealed he will not vote on the assisted dying bill for England and Wales unlike his predecessor Sir Keir Starmer.
