{"id":59471,"date":"2026-08-26T13:45:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T13:45:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/chinese-eswatini-relations-china-advises-its-citizens-to-leave-taiwan-ally-over-security-risks\/"},"modified":"2026-08-26T13:45:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T13:45:50","slug":"chinese-eswatini-relations-china-advises-its-citizens-to-leave-taiwan-ally-over-security-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/chinese-eswatini-relations-china-advises-its-citizens-to-leave-taiwan-ally-over-security-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese-Eswatini relations: China advises its citizens to leave Taiwan ally over security risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">China&#8217;s foreign ministry has told its citizens to leave the southern African kingdom  of Eswatini over &#8220;security risks&#8221;.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The ministry cited &#8220;rampant cyber fraud and criminal activities associated with gambling&#8221; as among its security concerns, but did not give details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It suggested its citizens relocate as soon as possible to &#8220;relatively safer&#8221; countries such as neighbouring South Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Eswatini is one of 12 countries, and the only one in Africa, that has diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Tuesday, the privately owned<a href=\"https:\/\/times.co.sz\/42252\/news\/re-arrested-chinese-nationals-demand-e208-million-from-government\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\"> Times of Eswatini news site reported that 40 Chinese nationals have been in detention since last month<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> after being arrested while trying to leave the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">They were first arrested &#8211; along with dozens of other foreign nationals &#8211; in March during raids on alleged illegal online gambling centres in the main city, Mbabane, and surrounding areas, the news site reported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The group&#8217;s lawyers had written to the attorney general and home affairs ministry, stating that they had pleaded guilty to immigration-related offences and had paid fines imposed by the courts, the news site reported. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The 40 were then released on the orders of the High Court, and their re-arrest was unlawful, the lawyers were quoted as saying. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Eswatini government has not yet commented. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In its advisory to its citizens, China says those who insist on travelling to or staying in the country will face &#8220;extremely high security risks, and the timeliness of assistance may be affected&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is unclear how many Chinese citizens work or live in Eswatini.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">China has for years pressured countries to end diplomatic relations with Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In April, Taiwan accused Beijing of trying to derail its President Lai Ching-te&#8217;s travel to Eswatini by pressuring nearby countries to revoke overflight permits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The trip, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/crl16p72x7xo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">originally planned for 22-26 April<\/a> to mark the 40th anniversary of Eswatini&#8217;s King Mswati III&#8217;s accession, was cancelled following the development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lai eventually travelled to Eswatini in May, without saying how he reached the country.
