{"id":59435,"date":"2026-08-25T22:07:41","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T22:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/wetherspoons-bans-customers-playing-music-from-phones-in-pubs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-25T22:07:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T22:07:41","slug":"wetherspoons-bans-customers-playing-music-from-phones-in-pubs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/wetherspoons-bans-customers-playing-music-from-phones-in-pubs\/","title":{"rendered":"Wetherspoons bans customers playing music from phones in pubs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The decision by Wetherspoons<b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> <\/b>follows a stricter, longstanding policy from rival pub chain Sam Smiths, which has a ban against phone or tech use of any kind, in addition to a ban on swearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mark Evans manages the Black Horse Inn, a Sam Smiths pub in Bradford, and tells the BBC says it offers a &#8220;digital detox&#8221; because of the ban. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Even strangers in for the first time, within 10 or 15 minutes, they&#8217;re joining in a conversation with other people,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;You do get occasional negative reaction where they&#8217;ll just turn around and walk out, which is fair enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We do have an element of hypocrisy though, because people are allowed to pay by their phones.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Like Sam Smiths pubs, Wetherspoons pubs do not play music, with chief executive Sir Tim Martin describing them as &#8220;an oasis of tranquillity and contemplation&#8230; in a world dominated by other people&#8217;s music and amplified sound&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Wetherspoons does play music in the evening at its 44 Lloyds&#8217; bars.
