{"id":59345,"date":"2026-08-24T16:40:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T16:40:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/network-rail-sues-companies-for-5m-over-llanegennech-derailment\/"},"modified":"2026-08-24T16:40:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T16:40:32","slug":"network-rail-sues-companies-for-5m-over-llanegennech-derailment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/network-rail-sues-companies-for-5m-over-llanegennech-derailment\/","title":{"rendered":"Network Rail sues companies for \u00a35m over Llanegennech derailment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Network Rail is suing two rail companies for more than \u00a35m after a fuel spill caused by a train derailment threatened an &#8220;environmental disaster&#8221; at a designated site for protection.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The body filed a legal claim earlier this month against DB Cargo UK and Touax Rail over the derailment near Llangennech, Carmarthenshire, in August 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The incident saw 10 wagons of the 25-wagon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-south-west-wales-53927802\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">train derail<\/a>, causing 446,000 litres of fuel to spill, and about 300 people had to leave the area due to the blaze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In High Court documents, Network Rail claimed that the derailment occurred because the wagon had &#8220;not been maintained with reasonable care&#8221; and is seeking damages for negligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">No one was injured, but 116,000 litres of fuel ignited while 330,000 litres drained into surrounding wetlands, which form part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-59971623\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">concluded in January 2022<\/a> that the derailment was caused by a set of wheels on one of the wagons locking, likely the result of a brake defect after &#8220;inadequate maintenance practices&#8221; were found in the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Network Rail, which owns, operates, maintains and develops Britain&#8217;s railways, claimed that the derailment occurred because the wagon had &#8220;not been maintained with reasonable care&#8221; by Touax. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cwyz37zzp22o?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Network Rail is suing two rail companies for more than \u00a35m after a fuel spill caused by a train derailment threatened an &#8220;environmental disaster&#8221; at a designated site for protection.
