{"id":58916,"date":"2026-08-18T13:19:35","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T13:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/inside-secret-police-warehouse-as-germany-targets-small-boats-gangs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T13:19:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T13:19:35","slug":"inside-secret-police-warehouse-as-germany-targets-small-boats-gangs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/inside-secret-police-warehouse-as-germany-targets-small-boats-gangs\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside secret police warehouse as Germany targets small boats gangs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Local prosecutors warn that Germany&#8217;s amended legal provision is, so far, largely untested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Lawyer Bernhard Schmeilzl, who specialises in UK-German law, points out that the legal situation is essentially as it was before Brexit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, he believes it will make a difference, even if stretched German law enforcement agencies may be more likely to focus on domestic matters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;This now enables the German police to go after these people,&#8221; he says. &#8220;If they are being notified about such suspicious activity, they will have to investigate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Enforcement and migrant sources have told the BBC that the gangs are coming under more pressure in Europe, including in Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c70989jrdweo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Channel crossings overall are on course to be lower this year<\/a>, but illegal entries into Europe have also been falling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UK Home Office says its work with countries like Germany &#8220;is bearing fruit&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UK government reports a drop of roughly 43% in the number of people who have made crossings between 1 January and 8 August this year, compared to the same period last year.
