{"id":58460,"date":"2026-08-11T11:28:57","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T11:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/syria-court-sentences-bashar-al-assad-sentenced-to-death-in-absentia\/"},"modified":"2026-08-11T11:28:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T11:28:57","slug":"syria-court-sentences-bashar-al-assad-sentenced-to-death-in-absentia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/syria-court-sentences-bashar-al-assad-sentenced-to-death-in-absentia\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria court sentences Bashar al-Assad sentenced to death in absentia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A Syrian court has sentenced ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia, after convicting him of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the country&#8217;s civil war.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is the first conviction against Assad, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cqx89reeevgo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">who fled from Damascus to Moscow<\/a> with his family after his regime was overthrown in December 2024, ending his family&#8217;s five-decade grip on power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Assad&#8217;s cousin and the former head of political security in southern Syria&#8217;s Deraa province, Atef Najib, was also sentenced to death. He had been put on trial and appeared wearing a striped prison uniform<b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\"> <\/b>inside a cage in the courtroom as the judge read out his sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Deraa is widely seen as the birthplace of the uprising against Assad&#8217;s rule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In March 2011, the detention and alleged torture of a group of teenagers accused of writing anti-government graffiti sparked protests in the city, which were met with a violent crackdown by security forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">That response helped ignite nationwide demonstrations that escalated into civil war in which hundreds of thousands of people were killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Syria&#8217;s interim government began trying officials associated with the Assad regime, which ruled the country for more than 50 years, earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Najib is one of the highest-ranking officials to be put on trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He was convicted of crimes including murder, &#8220;the intentional killing of children under 15&#8221; and &#8220;torture leading to death&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The court also sentenced six former military and security officials in absentia to death, including Bashar al-Assad&#8217;s younger brother, Maher.
