{"id":58244,"date":"2026-08-07T19:32:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T19:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/hosepipe-ban-in-force-for-millions-of-households-is-your-area-affected\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T19:32:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T19:32:14","slug":"hosepipe-ban-in-force-for-millions-of-households-is-your-area-affected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/hosepipe-ban-in-force-for-millions-of-households-is-your-area-affected\/","title":{"rendered":"Hosepipe ban in force for millions of households &#8211; is your area affected?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Droughts are complex phenomena, driven by a mix of natural and human causes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Met Office expects the UK to experience drier summers on average in future as the world warms, though there has been no clear trend so far.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But rising temperatures can play a more direct role by drawing extra moisture from the soil via evaporation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;A warmer atmosphere is thirstier for moisture and this can mean water in the soil, rivers and reservoirs are depleted more effectively, leading to more rapidly onsetting droughts, heatwaves and wildfires,&#8221; said Richard Allan, professor of climate science at the University of Reading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But there are other factors that determine whether dry conditions lead to water shortages, including how we use water.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cly1kwdze5qo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">a landmark review<\/a> into the water sector of England and Wales, water companies were criticised for historic underinvestment in water infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">As part of plans to address water shortages, the government and water companies are planning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cy8dv6l2jlzo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">nine new reservoirs for England by 2050<\/a>, in addition to one under construction at Havant Thicket in Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But the EA has warned that measures to tackle water leaks and control water demand &#8211; potentially including hosepipe bans and more smart meters &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj939kpnvx8o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">may be needed in England too<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Water companies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland &#8211; which are all public bodies or non-profit &#8211; also said they were taking steps to secure future supplies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/crk661074ejo?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Droughts are complex phenomena, driven by a mix of natural and human causes.
