{"id":57998,"date":"2026-08-04T03:46:07","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T03:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/us-states-sue-to-block-trump-tariffs-impacting-dozens-of-countries\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T03:46:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T03:46:07","slug":"us-states-sue-to-block-trump-tariffs-impacting-dozens-of-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/us-states-sue-to-block-trump-tariffs-impacting-dozens-of-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"US states sue to block Trump tariffs impacting dozens of countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Twenty five US states sued the administration of US President Donald Trump on Monday over new tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The tariffs came into effect in July, targeting countries including the UK and China as well as the European Union, over Washington&#8217;s contention that they have failed to properly tackle forced labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a legal document seen by the BBC, the coalition of Democratic states said the decision was &#8220;arbitrary, capricious, and contrary to law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In response, White House spokesman Kush Desai said: &#8220;The US is using its lawful authority&#8221; to address practices that burden American businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Desai added that any foreign country&#8217;s failing to deal with the importation of goods produced with forced labour was &#8220;unreasonable&#8221; and must be addressed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The new tariffs were imposed on major trading partners like Japan, Brazil and Taiwan under Section 301 of the 1974 US Trade Act, legislation which is designed to target nations that use forced labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The duties cover 99.4% of US imports, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The lawsuit said the Trump administration &#8220;cannot use forced labour as a pretext to continue its illegal tariff scheme.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The tariffs the USTR imposed are so broad that they defy the USTR&#8217;s own stated aims and make a mockery of the statute used to justify them,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cy4kp8jd0ppo?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty five US states sued the administration of US President Donald Trump on Monday over new tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partners.
