{"id":57959,"date":"2026-08-03T12:58:35","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T12:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/aung-san-suu-kyi-myanmar-military-releases-photo-of-detained-former-leader\/"},"modified":"2026-08-03T12:58:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T12:58:35","slug":"aung-san-suu-kyi-myanmar-military-releases-photo-of-detained-former-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/aung-san-suu-kyi-myanmar-military-releases-photo-of-detained-former-leader\/","title":{"rendered":"Aung San Suu Kyi: Myanmar military releases photo of detained former leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Detained Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been allowed to meet a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross, the first confirmed outside contact with her since a letter to her son two and a half years ago.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In photographs of the meeting released by the military government Suu Kyi appeared to be healthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She was detained shortly after the armed forces deposed her government in 2021, and sentenced to 33 years in jail on what are widely viewed as trumped-up charges, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-66357403\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">her sentence has been reduced<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cz72j8eex4eo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">she has been moved to house arrest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Despite repeated assurances from the military that Suu Kyi is alive and well, they have never provided any convincing evidence of this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-65960939\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Her son Kim Aris<\/a> has in recent months mounted an international campaign demanding proof of life for the 81-year-old democracy icon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Now a delegation from the ICRC has been allowed to meet her \u2013 her first confirmed meeting with anyone outside the government for nearly four years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Photographs released of her with the ICRC team led by its representative Arnaud de Baecque show Suu Kyi looking relaxed and well, although no details of her state of health have been given, nor of what they talked about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The visit was carried out in accordance with the ICRC&#8217;s standards and procedures for visiting people deprived of liberty.
