{"id":57449,"date":"2026-07-27T01:20:42","date_gmt":"2026-07-27T01:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/trump-vows-to-investigate-eu-over-fining-of-us-tech-companies\/"},"modified":"2026-07-27T01:20:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T01:20:42","slug":"trump-vows-to-investigate-eu-over-fining-of-us-tech-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/trump-vows-to-investigate-eu-over-fining-of-us-tech-companies\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump vows to investigate EU over fining of US tech companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Donald Trump says the US will launch an investigation into the European Union and threatened a fresh tariff over fines handed to some of the biggest American tech companies. <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It comes days after the European Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cevmenngkzpo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">fined Google \u20ac890m ($1bn)<\/a> for operating in a way that squeezed out competitors to its services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In a post to Truth Social, which Trump owns, the US president said the EU would pay a &#8220;very big price&#8221; over how it had treated Google, along with other major US tech companies Apple, Meta, and Amazon, which have also been investigated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The United States of America is not a &#8220;PIGGYBANK&#8221; for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trump said any fines should be &#8220;entirely reversed&#8221; and that he was initiating a trade investigation of the EU while considering &#8220;a substantial TARIFF&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He added that the US would &#8220;immediately initiate a 301 investigation&#8221; over European regulators&#8217; alleged practice of &#8220;robbing American companies and, in turn, the American taxpayer&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Section 301 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/crs-product\/IF11346\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Trade Act of 1974<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> gives The Office of the United States Trade Representative the power to react and investigate trade practices believed to be unfair. The second Trump Administration has <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/issue-areas\/enforcement\/section-301-investigations\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">launched several such investigations<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> since last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The tariff threat comes just one day after Trump announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cvgj61j6l08o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">new tariffs on 60 trading partners<\/a>, including the EU, UK and China, of between 10% and 12.5%. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Trump also last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cn4rd71411ko\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">threatened a 100% import tariff <\/a>on any European country that introduces a digital services tax on American technology giants, despite many such nations <a href=\"https:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/data\/all\/eu\/digital-services-taxes-europe\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">already doing so<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Major tech companies, including Google, Meta, Apple, and Amazon, have donated millions of dollars to funds behind Trump&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cgly2krddwgo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">campaign<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c891yxgj44ko\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">presidency<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Jos\u00e9 Casta\u00f1eda, a spokesman for Google, told the BBC the company had &#8220;worked hard to comply&#8221; with Europe&#8217;s Digital Markets Act but had &#8220;expressed our concerns about the impact of recent EC decisions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;We appreciate the engagement by the administration and US government,&#8221; Casta\u00f1eda added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In addition to the recent fine against Google, Trump claimed in his post that Apple had received EU fines of $15bn, Meta fines of $3bn, and Amazon fines of $2.5bn. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Representatives of Meta, Apple and Amazon, as well as the European Commission, have been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was not clear where the figures cited by Trump come from. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Shortly before Trump was elected president in 2024, he said Tim Cook, Apple&#8217;s chief executive, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj4d75zl212o\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">called him directly<\/a> to complain about fines the company had received from European regulators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The call came not long after Apple lost a long-running dispute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckgwkwxr4eqo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">over unpaid taxes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has been fined several times by EU regulators, including for violations of user privacy and <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_5801\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">competition laws<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>. It is also facing new fines over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c8j2dje3pldo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">purportedly &#8220;addictive&#8221;<\/a> features of its apps. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cm248vzg9jwo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Meta last year said<\/a> the EU was &#8220;attempting to handicap successful American businesses&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Amazon, however, appears to have been investigated at times by the European Commission, but avoided major fines.
