{"id":57080,"date":"2026-07-21T12:23:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T12:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/russian-warship-carried-out-firing-exercise-off-plymouth-coast\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T12:23:10","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T12:23:10","slug":"russian-warship-carried-out-firing-exercise-off-plymouth-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/russian-warship-carried-out-firing-exercise-off-plymouth-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian warship carried out firing exercise off Plymouth coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A Russian warship, shadowed by a Royal Navy vessel, carried out a live-fire artillery exercise just 40 nautical miles south of Plymouth on Monday.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Royal Navy monitored the exercise and is continuing to &#8220;track the vessel&#8217;s activity closely&#8221;, a Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Russian frigate, Neustrashimy, was also being monitored by a French military aircraft which made radio contact with the warship asking it to clarify its intentions, the BBC has been told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The BBC was told that, prior to opening fire, the Russian warship informed the Royal Navy Offshore Patrol Vessel, HMS Tyne, of its intention to conduct gunnery activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Russian warship requested that that HMS Tyne reposition to a safer distance, which it did. The Russian live-fire exercise took place in international waters and lasted for 30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The incident will be a reminder for the new prime minister of increased Russian naval activity near UK waters in recent months. UK defence sources would not comment on whether the incident might have been timed to coincide with the start of Andy Burnham&#8217;s premiership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Last month, Royal Marine Commandos <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/clyek039l2vo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">boarded a Russian &#8220;shadow fleet&#8221; oil tanker in the English Channel<\/a> in a six-hour operation which was the first of its kind by UK armed forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Also in June, a British couple in international waters in the English Channel came across a Russian warship &#8211; Admiral Grigorovich &#8211; 23 miles (37km) off the Isle of Wight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The frigate<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c20yzm84r7lo\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\"> fired warning shots as Jane and Alan Kelvey sailed their yacht<\/a> on what Russia&#8217;s defence ministry said had been a &#8220;dangerous approach&#8221;.
