{"id":56519,"date":"2026-07-12T19:48:53","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T19:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/families-welcome-new-vat-cut-scheme-to-help-with-holiday-costs\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T19:48:53","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T19:48:53","slug":"families-welcome-new-vat-cut-scheme-to-help-with-holiday-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/families-welcome-new-vat-cut-scheme-to-help-with-holiday-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Families welcome new VAT-cut scheme to help with holiday costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Bruce Leeke, chief executive of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ormiston.org\/\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Ormiston Families<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>, an Ipswich-based charity, says the VAT scheme is helpful, but will not solve the problems faced by families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The cost-of-living crisis hasn&#8217;t gone away,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It has lots of different impacts on people&#8217;s mental health, [and] obviously if you are anxious about your finances, that anxiety gets passed on to family members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;When the summer comes, there is much more care needed for children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He wants to see more investment by the government on long-term help for families.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Our recommendation would be to invest in early intervention,&#8221; he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The Labour MP for Southend West and Leigh, David Burton-Sampson, says the government is already providing 30 hours of free childcare a week for children before they go to school, but concedes that the issue may need to be looked at again. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;But it is very difficult,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;There is a finite amount of finance and we&#8217;re trying to target that finance on the ways that will make the biggest difference to people&#8217;s lives.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Do you have a story suggestion for Suffolk?
