{"id":55505,"date":"2026-06-28T09:02:38","date_gmt":"2026-06-28T09:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/woman-from-essex-urges-over-70s-to-self-refer-for-mammograms\/"},"modified":"2026-06-28T09:02:38","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T09:02:38","slug":"woman-from-essex-urges-over-70s-to-self-refer-for-mammograms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/woman-from-essex-urges-over-70s-to-self-refer-for-mammograms\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman from Essex urges over-70s to self-refer for mammograms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sam Robinson, from the Norfolk-based cancer charity Big C, said there were several reasons why routine breast screening stops after 70.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;There could be other health problems that patients have,&#8221; said Robinson, who previously worked as a breast cancer nurse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;The treatments could be detrimental to their health\u2026 that is research-based, so that&#8217;s the reason why it stops for over 70s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">NHS England said the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/breast-screening-for-women-aged-71-or-over\/71-or-over-you-can-still-have-breast-screening-if-you-choose\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">overdiagnosis increases with age<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>, meaning some cancers detected may never cause harm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It&#8217;s more likely that someone in their older years will die with breast cancer rather than from breast cancer,&#8221; Robinson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">However, she said screening remained important, particularly if women noticed changes or were otherwise concerned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She explained that for routine mammograms every three years, those over 70 could contact their local breast screening unit direct, or their GP if they noticed changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;If people aren&#8217;t going for screening, something could easily be missed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A DHSC spokesperson said: &#8220;Decisions regarding screening for breast cancer are made based on the best available evidence, with the independent UK National Screening Committee keeping all programmes under careful review.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Cancer Research UK and AgeX are supporting a UK trial to examine the risks and benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/health-professional\/cancer-screening\/breast-cancer-screening\/research-optimisation\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">extending screening to women <span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-i2z2ig-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a>aged between 47 to 49 and 71 to 73.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A report is expected to be published in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Do you have a story suggestion for Essex?
