{"id":55448,"date":"2026-06-27T11:32:35","date_gmt":"2026-06-27T11:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/europes-deadly-heatwave-breaks-german-record-and-halts-public-events\/"},"modified":"2026-06-27T11:32:35","modified_gmt":"2026-06-27T11:32:35","slug":"europes-deadly-heatwave-breaks-german-record-and-halts-public-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/europes-deadly-heatwave-breaks-german-record-and-halts-public-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Europe&#8217;s deadly heatwave breaks German record and halts public events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Temperatures broke June records in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands on Friday as the death toll from Europe&#8217;s heatwave climbed in Spain and France and authorities cancelled concerts and other public events because of health risks.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Germany&#8217;s <\/b>highest ever temperature of 41.3C was recorded provisionally in the south-western city of Saarbr\u00fccken, just over the border from France, which this week endured its hottest temperatures three days in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Although <b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">France&#8217;s <\/b>heatwave has peaked, its health minister said the &#8220;emergence of deaths at home&#8221; was of particular concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The World Meteorological Organization warned of &#8220;major impacts&#8221; to health, ecosystems, agriculture and labour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Spokeswoman Clare Nullis said: &#8220;We need to get used to it, unfortunately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Europe&#8217;s deadly June heatwave has moved slowly north and east, and <b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Belgian <\/b>forecaster David Dehenauw said unofficially that 40C had been recorded in Kleine Brogel, close to the Dutch border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A top temperature of 39.4C was recorded in the southern <b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Dutch <\/b>province of Limburg. Meanwhile, in the <b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">UK <\/b>a provisional June record of 37.1C was recorded at Cavendish in Suffolk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">At least 150 million people across the European continent were facing temperatures higher than 35C on Friday, according to calculations by the AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Czech <\/b>meteorologists believe a 2012 record temperature of 40.4C could be broken on Saturday, while <b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Austrian <\/b>forecasters believe the national record will fall on Sunday. <b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Balkan <\/b>countries are seeing extreme heat too, with up to 39C forecast in Serbia over the weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">In <b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Switzerland<\/b>, the Beznau nuclear power plant took both reactors off grid on Friday because the temperature in the River Aare reached 25C, which is considered too high to cool the reactors sufficiently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cx2knzzwprgo?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Temperatures broke June records in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands on Friday as the death toll from Europe&#8217;s heatwave climbed in Spain and France and authorities cancelled concerts and other public events because of health risks.
