{"id":55187,"date":"2026-06-23T17:37:21","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T17:37:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/pm-to-push-ahead-with-controversial-defence-plan-despite-resignation\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T17:37:21","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T17:37:21","slug":"pm-to-push-ahead-with-controversial-defence-plan-despite-resignation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/pm-to-push-ahead-with-controversial-defence-plan-despite-resignation\/","title":{"rendered":"PM to push ahead with controversial defence plan despite resignation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Speaking in the House of Commons, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed that the plan would be published before the Nato summit in Turkey, on 7 July, and said it would &#8220;involve more money, spent more effectively and meet the scale of the challenges we face&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Under Sir Keir&#8217;s leadership, defence spending has increased, however on resigning as defence secretary John Healey said a planned rise to 2.68% of GDP by 2020 fell &#8220;well short&#8221; of the 3% target he argued was necessary. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">There have been reports that the Ministry of Defence is asking for an extra \u00a328bn between now and the end of the decade, but had only been offered an additional \u00a310bn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Sir Keir has said he has asked all government departments to cut their investment budgets to free up extra money for defence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">But there is no suggestion that the government will increase spending above what had already been set out in the investment plan seen by Healey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">New Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis said he has had &#8220;very good and constructive&#8221; meetings with the chancellor in recent days, adding he is &#8220;determined to secure the best possible deal that I can&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Speaking at the Rusi Land Warfare Conference, Jarvis also said his &#8220;priority is to get the defence investment plan done but not at any cost&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">He said: &#8220;I have a responsibility to get it right. There will now be a change of prime minister, there will be no change in the urgent need to produce the defence investment plan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte has said he expects all members of the alliance to arrive at the Turkey summit with &#8220;clear, concrete and credible plans&#8221; on how they will increase their defence spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">European countries have come under pressure to boost their budgets, following Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine, and the re-election of President Donald Trump, who warned allies he would not defend them unless they spent more to defend themselves. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Jarvis acknowledged the UK has vowed to increase defence spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035, adding: &#8220;I told the Nato Secretary-General last week that promise will be met and a credible plan will be produced to ensure that it is.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Conservative shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge raised the subject of defence spending in the House of Commons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a simple question,&#8221; he said, adding: &#8220;Who is in charge of defence in the United Kingdom at a time of war on two fronts?<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;Is it the prime minister or the right honourable member for Makerfield?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Burnham is set to receive briefings from civil servants on taking over as prime minister, as part of Sir Keir&#8217;s promise to ensure &#8220;orderly&#8221; transition of power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Downing Street has said the outgoing prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c2eyj7j4evko\" class=\"ssrcss-1e0jzsh-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">has authorised access talks to begin<\/a> with &#8220;prospective candidates&#8221; to be the next Labour leader.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c892dvvwpjjo?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaking in the House of Commons, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed that the plan would be published before the Nato summit in Turkey, on 7 July, and said it would &#8220;involve more money, spent more effectively and meet the scale of the challenges we face&#8221;.
