{"id":4800,"date":"2024-07-23T04:08:48","date_gmt":"2024-07-23T04:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/booksellers-hope-soaring-sales-will-continue-as-we-read-more\/"},"modified":"2024-07-23T04:08:48","modified_gmt":"2024-07-23T04:08:48","slug":"booksellers-hope-soaring-sales-will-continue-as-we-read-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/booksellers-hope-soaring-sales-will-continue-as-we-read-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Booksellers hope soaring sales will continue as we read more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Not exactly one hundred years of solitude, to use the title of a well-known novel, but the long coronavirus lockdowns gave many of us a lot more time to read.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">As a result, sales of physical books rose strongly: some 202 million paperbacks and hardbacks were sold in the UK in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.printweek.com\/news\/article\/printed-book-sales-pass-200m-in-2020-despite-pandemic\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">according to industry figures.<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">That was the first time these sales had passed the 200 million mark since 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It was a similar picture in the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/industry-news\/bookselling\/article\/85256-print-unit-sales-rose-8-2-in-2020.html\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">where sales hit 751 million last year,<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">, <!-- -->external<\/span><\/a> the highest figure since 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">With the UK&#8217;s Bookshop Day being held on Saturday, 9 October, to encourage readers to shop in their local bookshop, the industry hopes this trend will continue now that people have got into the habit of reading more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Alison Holmes, who helps run a book club in York, believes that the lockdown, and the extra downtime it offered people, was liberating for some avid readers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;I know people&#8230; who have been able to sit down and read without feeling guilty about all the other things they should be doing,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ms Holmes&#8217; book club has a fun and healthy twist.
