BBC Verify has been examining their claims.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Will Labour bring in a retirement tax?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><b id=\"rishi-sunak\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\">Rishi Sunak<!-- --><\/b> said under a future Labour government \u201cthe state pension will be subject to a retirement tax\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Pensioners relying solely on the state pension are on course to potentially pay a small amount of income tax in 2027-28, because the state pension in that year (\u00a312,578) is forecast to marginally overtake the tax-free personal allowance (\u00a312,570).<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Conservative triple lock plus policy &#8211; which raises the personal allowance for pensioners to \u00a313,710 by 2027-28 &#8211; would remove that risk.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Labour hasn\u2019t said yet whether they would match it or not. But note, the Conservatives only unveiled the policy within the last couple of weeks, so to present this as a planned Labour tax rise is a bit disingenuous.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And bear in mind that the Conservatives\u2019 triple lock plus would only save someone living solely on the state pension about \u00a329 a year.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Furthermore, some people <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/explainers-63635185\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">are already paying tax<!-- --><\/a> on part of their state pension. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Analysis by former Lib Dem pensions minister Steve Webb, who works for an actuary firm, also suggests that around 2.5m pensioners (one in five of the total) are currently paying income tax on their state pension and would still be even if the triple lock plus were introduced. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">That&#8217;s because many people receive additional state pension payments due to their participation in the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (SERPS).<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><i id=\"by-ben-chu\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kKcaog\">By Ben Chu<!-- --><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--$!--><!--\/$--><\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Have 50,000 people crossed the Channel under Sunak?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><b id=\"keir-starmer\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\">Keir Starmer<!-- --><\/b> said: &#8220;Since Rishi Sunak became prime minister 50,000 people have come across by small boats.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He is right about that.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Home Office <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/migrants-detected-crossing-the-english-channel-in-small-boats\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">publishes figures<!-- --><\/a> &#8211; going back to 2018 &#8211; for people detected crossing the English Channel in small boats. In the audio clip published by the Telegraph, Jones did not specify direct government spending.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><i id=\"by-mark-poynting\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kKcaog\">By Mark Poynting<!-- --><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--$!--><!--\/$--><\/p>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Is Labour\u2019s manifesto fully funded and costed?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><b id=\"keir-starmer\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\">Keir Starmer<!-- --><\/b> referred to Labour\u2019s manifesto as \u201cfully funded, fully costed\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But in its analysis of manifestos earlier in the week, independent think tank the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said that it was suspicious of claims that they were fully funded, particularly on promises to reduce NHS waiting times.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cYou can\u2019t pledge to end all waits of more than 18 weeks, allocate no money to that pledge, and then claim to have a fully costed manifesto,\u201d IFS director Paul Johnson said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He also said that the Conservatives\u2019 commitments to the NHS \u201care essentially unfunded\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><i id=\"by-anthony-reuben\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kKcaog\">By Anthony Reuben<!-- --><\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Would Labour put taxes up by \u00a32,000 per family?<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><b id=\"rishi-sunak\" class=\"sc-7dcfb11b-0 kVRnKf\">Rishi Sunak<!-- --><\/b> asked \u201ccan you afford to pay at least \u00a32,000 more in tax?\u201d, claiming that\u2019s what people would be asked to do by a Labour government.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The figure risks misleading people, not least because it consists of \u00a3500 a year extra for four years. That is not what you would normally think of if somebody said your taxes were going up by \u00a32,000.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Tories reached the figure by adding up how much they claim Labour\u2019s spending plans would cost &#8211; \u00a338.5bn over four years &#8211; and dividing this by the number of UK households with at least one person working. Labour disputes the figure.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Conservatives say the costings were worked out by impartial civil servants, but some are based on assumptions made by politically appointed special advisers.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">For example, one costing looks at Labour\u2019s plan to have more services provided by the state instead of by private companies and it assumes that private companies are always 7.5% more efficient. But the civil servants doing the costings warned about the use of that figure. He said \u201cpeople are still paying the price\u201d and they were \u201cpaying hundreds of pounds more because of the damage done to the economy\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It is true that there was a spike in mortgage rates after the mini-budget &#8211; which included unfunded tax cuts, during Truss\u2019s short-lived premiership.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But mortgage rates had been rising before the mini-budget, as the Bank of England put up interest rates to fight inflation, which began rising after the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.
