{"id":43946,"date":"2026-01-02T08:58:40","date_gmt":"2026-01-02T08:58:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/london-congestion-charge-for-ev-drivers-comes-into-effect\/"},"modified":"2026-01-02T08:58:40","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T08:58:40","slug":"london-congestion-charge-for-ev-drivers-comes-into-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/london-congestion-charge-for-ev-drivers-comes-into-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"London congestion charge for EV drivers comes into effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in central London are now having to pay the capital&#8217;s congestion charge for the first time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c5y92rdqe9eo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 iCaRzc\">confirmed in November that EVs would lose their exemption from the fee from 2 January<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The regular daily congestion charge for non-electrified vehicles has also risen from \u00a315 to \u00a318, its first rise since 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The congestion charge, introduced in 2003, covers an area of central London between 07:00 and 18:00 on weekdays, and between 12:00 and 18:00 on weekends and bank holidays.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Pure battery-powered EVs had previously been eligible for a 100% discount.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Electric cars are now eligible for a 25% discount if registered for Auto Pay, reducing the fee to \u00a313.50 a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">There is a 50% discount for electric vans, HGVs, light quadricycles and heavy quadricycles registered for Auto Pay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Transport for London had previously proposed to scrap the electric vehicle exemption entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">It said without changes, about 2,200 more vehicles would use the congestion charging zone on an average weekday in 2026,  increasing congestion and undermining the current scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The Auto Pay discounts for electric vehicles are due to be reduced further in 2030 &#8211; to 12.5% for electric cars, and to 25% for electric vans, HGVs, light quadricycles and heavy quadricycles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">From March 2027, for new applicants only, the 90% residents&#8217; discount will also only be available for EVs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c394l4zeeyyo?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in central London are now having to pay the capital&#8217;s congestion charge for the first time.
