And it left Ms Teevan convinced that AI could be on the verge of transforming many things, including meetings.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cHistorically computing has been quite good at helping make the drudgery more efficient,\u201d she says. \u201cBut having something that can help throw out a bunch of ideas, and be able to reflect on those, that really feels qualitatively different, and like a real opportunity.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However, while Ms Teevan will long remember that specific work meeting, for most of us such gatherings with colleagues can be drudgery. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Elon Musk once said that \u201cexcessive meetings are the blight of big companies and almost always get worse over time\u201d. Zoom has AI Companion, Teams has Copilot, and Meet has Duet AI.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Rapidly expanding functions already include the AI transcribing the meeting for you, suggesting questions you might want to ask, summarising the meeting in point form, reminding you of who else is present, or even in the case of Meet &#8211; <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/8\/29\/23849056\/google-meet-ai-duet-attend-for-me\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">its AI attending an online meeting on your behalf.<!-- --><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Husayn Kassai is the founder of London-based start-up Quench AI, which makes AI-powered training software.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He predicts that in the future \u201ceveryone in the workforce will have some sort of AI coach accompanying them\u201d to meetings.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cMeetings are going to be a lot more productive, because we will be going into them much better informed, and able to make useful and more valuable judgements,\u201d says Mr Kassai.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He adds that workers will use AI \u201cto help get them clued up and give them a breakdown of the information\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">As a result, he says meetings will start to accomplish things, unlike now, because \u201cpeople aren\u2019t talking about stuff that matters because they are not prepared\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Kassai also envisages AI acting as a kind of moderator, offering feedback after the meeting, perhaps even pointing out the things the humans in the room feel unable to.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWhen you have an idiot in the meeting room who goes off on a rant, and someone who doesn\u2019t say much\u2026 the AI could say things like \u2018speaker three, you only spoke 2% of the time and next time you need to speak 20% of the time\u2019.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 dOZXmm\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-13b8515c-1 bbjeKz\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/bbcx\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-13b8515c-0 WTpgI hide-when-no-script\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 50vw, (min-width: 1008px) 66vw, 96vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/240\/cpsprodpb\/7b56\/live\/65cb7c10-434a-11ef-8895-6d3cb2081c6f.jpg.webp 240w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/7b56\/live\/65cb7c10-434a-11ef-8895-6d3cb2081c6f.jpg.webp 320w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/7b56\/live\/65cb7c10-434a-11ef-8895-6d3cb2081c6f.jpg.webp 480w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/640\/cpsprodpb\/7b56\/live\/65cb7c10-434a-11ef-8895-6d3cb2081c6f.jpg.webp 640w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/800\/cpsprodpb\/7b56\/live\/65cb7c10-434a-11ef-8895-6d3cb2081c6f.jpg.webp 800w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/cpsprodpb\/7b56\/live\/65cb7c10-434a-11ef-8895-6d3cb2081c6f.jpg.webp 1024w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1536\/cpsprodpb\/7b56\/live\/65cb7c10-434a-11ef-8895-6d3cb2081c6f.jpg.webp 1536w\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/7b56\/live\/65cb7c10-434a-11ef-8895-6d3cb2081c6f.jpg.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Husayn Kassai Husayn Kassai\" class=\"sc-13b8515c-0 hbOWRP\"\/><span class=\"sc-13b8515c-2 iuvLSH\">Husayn Kassai<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">Husayn Kassai says AI could calculate how much time each person speaks for<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Ms Teevan claims that Copilot is already having \u201ca pretty significant impact\u201d on people\u2019s video meetings. \u201cPeople are able to summarise meetings four times faster.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Yet as numerous reports over the past year have indicated, AI isn\u2019t yet foolproof, and can make mistakes, or as they are also called, <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/topics\/ai-hallucinations\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201challucinations\u201d.<!-- --><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In response to the old adage \u201cgarbage in, garbage out\u201d, Ms Teevan says Microsoft is currently doing a lot of work to ensure that Copilot\u2019s <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/servicecenter.fsu.edu\/s\/article\/What-is-AI-prompting\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cAI prompting\u201d<!-- --><\/a> is as good as possible.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">AI prompting refers to the AI giving the best possible answer to the user\u2019s question. To do this, it needs to be able to learn as quickly as possible who the user is, what he or she does as a job, and which answers they are most likely to want.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cOne of the most common ways that I use AI is to ask it what questions I should ask in a meeting,\u201d says Ms Teevan.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">To get the correct answers from the AI, Ms Teevan says it has to \u201cunderstand that I\u2019m a research scientist and executive at Microsoft\u201d.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Business psychologist Jess Barker says it is easy to understand why so many of us don\u2019t like work meetings. \u201cThe data suggests, as does our experience, that most meetings are time consuming and ineffectual.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">She is also \u201cnot convinced that the general level of frustration will disappear altogether\u201d thanks to AI. \u201cI think we may find that we continue to be frustrated with meetings, but for different reasons &#8211; such as, annoyance with person A who never shows up to the Monday morning meeting, but instead requests that the AI tool attend on their behalf.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cOr frustration with the person who turns up late to every meeting, and uses the AI tool to update on what they\u2019ve missed so far. I can see how this could result in increased resentment and mistrust between colleagues.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Yet Microsoft\u2019s Ms Teevan is convinced that AI will help to improve meetings. \u201cIt can help people feel less overwhelmed, it can help them get started and check things off their list.
