They asked me to stop cycling,&#8221; Fariba says. &#8220;But I didn&#8217;t give up. I secretly continued,&#8221; she smiles.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It didn\u2019t come without dangers &#8211; people tried to hit them with cars or rickshaws as they rode or threw stones at them as they cycled past.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;People were abusive. All I wanted to do was win races,&#8221; says Yulduz.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And the situation was about to get worse.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Fleeing their home<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In 2021, four years after the sisters started riding, the Taliban retook control of the country and clamped down on women\u2019s rights, restricting their access to education and limiting how they could travel.  They also banned women from taking part in sport.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Yulduz and Fariba had dreamed of one day competing in the Olympics. Now they knew if they wanted to race at all they had to leave Afghanistan.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure>\n<div data-component=\"image-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 dOZXmm\">\n<div data-testid=\"image\" class=\"sc-13b8515c-1 bbjeKz\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/bbcx\/grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-13b8515c-0 WTpgI hide-when-no-script\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1280px) 50vw, (min-width: 1008px) 66vw, 96vw\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/240\/cpsprodpb\/9573\/live\/09e880b0-4358-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg.webp 240w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/320\/cpsprodpb\/9573\/live\/09e880b0-4358-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg.webp 320w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/9573\/live\/09e880b0-4358-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg.webp 480w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/640\/cpsprodpb\/9573\/live\/09e880b0-4358-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg.webp 640w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/800\/cpsprodpb\/9573\/live\/09e880b0-4358-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg.webp 800w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/cpsprodpb\/9573\/live\/09e880b0-4358-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg.webp 1024w,https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1536\/cpsprodpb\/9573\/live\/09e880b0-4358-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg.webp 1536w\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/480\/cpsprodpb\/9573\/live\/09e880b0-4358-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Yulduz sat on her bike smiling wearing cycling kit, glasses and a helmet\" class=\"sc-13b8515c-0 hbOWRP\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-8353772e-0 cvNhQw\">After leaving Afghanistan Yulduz and her sister first trained with a cycling team in Italy<!-- --><\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Using contacts in the cycling community they managed to secure seats on an Italian evacuation flight, along with three teammates.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Once in Italy, the women joined a cycling team and got proper coaching for the first time.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cBack in Afghanistan, we didn\u2019t have professional training,\u201d says Yulduz. \u201cAll we used to do was take our bikes and ride.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But leaving their homeland and family was not easy.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cThe biggest thing for me is to be away from my mother,\u201d says Fariba. \u201cI never thought that because of cycling I would be separated from my brothers and sisters.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cI\u2019ve sacrificed a lot.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Taliban\u2019s takeover of Afghanistan also threw into doubt whether the country would even be allowed to compete at the Olympics.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">National Olympic Committees are supposed to select athletes for the Games without any government interference.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">As the Taliban\u2019s ban on women playing sport breaks this rule, by preventing women being chosen for Afghanistan\u2019s team, it led to calls for the country to be banned from the Olympics &#8211; as it had been when the militant group was last in power.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But the International Olympic Committee wanted to find a way to allow Afghan women to compete at the Games.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Behind the scenes talks took place between the heads of Afghan sporting bodies, including some now living in exile, about putting together a special team to represent the country in Paris.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Heading to Paris<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-43e6b7ba-0 bWSguZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">As time ticked by, and Paris 2024 got ever closer, it looked as if no Afghan athletes would be at the Games.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Then, in June, International Olympic Committee announced that it had arranged for a special gender-equal team representing Afghanistan to go the Paris Olympics. It would be made up of three women and three men.
