{"id":39617,"date":"2025-10-21T06:55:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T06:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/highest-government-borrowing-in-september-for-five-years\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T06:55:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T06:55:18","slug":"highest-government-borrowing-in-september-for-five-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/highest-government-borrowing-in-september-for-five-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Highest government borrowing in September for five years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">UK government borrowing in September hit the highest level for the month in five years, according to the latest official figures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Borrowing &#8211; the difference between public spending and tax income &#8211; was \u00a320.2bn in September, up \u00a31.6bn from the same month last year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The ONS said a rise in debt interest payments offset the increased amount the government had raised through tax and national insurance.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Borrowing over the first six months of the financial year has now reached \u00a399.8bn, the ONS said, which is up \u00a311.5bn from the same period last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The September figures continue a trend seen in August, when borrowing was also at its highest level for that month in five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The borrowing figure was slightly less than analysts&#8217; expectations, but was roughly in line with what had been projected by the government&#8217;s official forecaster, the Office for Budget Responsibility, in March. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Although tax income was significantly higher than last year, in part due to the increase in employers&#8217; national insurance contributions, spending also increased.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">This was partly due to pay rises and inflation increasing the government&#8217;s day-to-day running costs, as well as inflation-linked increases to state benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Responding to the figures, Chief Secretary to the Treasury James Murray said the government would &#8220;never play fast and loose with the public finances&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">He reiterated the government&#8217;s aim of bringing down borrowing, to be rid of &#8220;costly debt interest, instead putting that money into our NHS, schools and police&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c8035130918o?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UK government borrowing in September hit the highest level for the month in five years, according to the latest official figures.
