{"id":39131,"date":"2025-10-13T15:42:54","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T15:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/nigerian-university-lecturers-boycott-classes\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T15:42:54","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T15:42:54","slug":"nigerian-university-lecturers-boycott-classes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/nigerian-university-lecturers-boycott-classes\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian university lecturers boycott classes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Lecturers at public universities in Nigeria have begun a two-week strike over pay and funding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The industrial action comes just weeks after universities resumed for a new academic year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Announcing the decision, the leader of the  Academic Staff Union of Universities (Asuu), Professor Chris Piwuna, described the decision as &#8220;inevitable&#8221; due to what he said was government failures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The government has urged lecturers to reconsider the strike, stressing that constructive dialogue remains the best way to resolve the crisis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The government added that striking lecturers can expect not to be paid under the country&#8217;s &#8220;No Work, No Pay&#8221; labour law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">In a statement, it said it had made a comprehensive offer to the union addressing key issues such as working conditions, institutional governance and staff welfare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The government added that it was still awaiting ASUU&#8217;s official response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Nigeria&#8217;s university lecturers have a long history of industrial action over issues of funding, salaries, and welfare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">ASUU&#8217;s disputes with successive governments date back to the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Agreements reached in 1992, 2009 and 2013 have often gone unfulfilled, prompting repeated strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">The last <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-63234558\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 jZoZnB\">major one in 2022<\/a> lasted for eight months, disrupting the academic calendar and affecting millions of students nationwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">It took an industrial court to stop the strike and force the teachers to go back to the classrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 bJoRPJ\">Observers say these recurring strikes reflect deeper structural challenges in Nigeria&#8217;s higher education sector &#8211; including chronic underfunding, politicised management and a persistent lack of trust between the government and university unions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c1wl78jrp74o?at_medium=RSS&#038;at_campaign=rss\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lecturers at public universities in Nigeria have begun a two-week strike over pay and funding.
