{"id":3561,"date":"2024-05-15T12:22:35","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T12:22:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/uk-exits-recession-with-fastest-growth-in-two-years\/"},"modified":"2024-05-15T12:22:35","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T12:22:35","slug":"uk-exits-recession-with-fastest-growth-in-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/uk-exits-recession-with-fastest-growth-in-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"UK exits recession with fastest growth in two years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Stronger than expected growth at the start of the year saw the UK emerge from recession.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The economy grew by 0.6% between January and March, the fastest rate for two years, official figures showed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The UK fell into recession at the end of last year after shrinking for two three-month periods in a row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the economy had &#8220;turned a corner&#8221;, but Labour said this was no time for a &#8220;victory lap&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Thursday, the governor of the Bank of England, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-68986043\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">Andrew Bailey, told the BBC<\/a> that the UK was seeing a recovery, although it was not a strong one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Interest rates are currently at their highest for 16 years, meaning people are paying more to borrow money for things such as mortgages and loans, but savers have also received better returns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Mortgage rates have been creeping up in recent weeks, after forecasts for when the Bank of England would cut borrowing costs were pushed back. <\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">On Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-68978591\" class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\">the Bank said<\/a> that inflation, which measures the rate prices rise at, would fall close to its target level in the next couple of months. That had boosted expectations of a rate cut in June.
