{"id":3365,"date":"2024-03-09T12:16:21","date_gmt":"2024-03-09T12:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/yousaf-condemns-outrageous-smear-over-scottish-governments-gaza-funding\/"},"modified":"2024-03-09T12:16:21","modified_gmt":"2024-03-09T12:16:21","slug":"yousaf-condemns-outrageous-smear-over-scottish-governments-gaza-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/yousaf-condemns-outrageous-smear-over-scottish-governments-gaza-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Yousaf condemns &#8216;outrageous smear&#8217; over Scottish government&#8217;s Gaza funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Scotland&#8217;s first minister Humza Yousaf has described accusations that he may have had a conflict of interest in sending funding to Gaza as an &#8220;outrageous smear&#8221; and &#8220;far right conspiracy&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Scottish government donated \u00a3250,000 to the UNRWA aid agency in November 2023, at the same time as Mr Yousaf&#8217;s parents-in-law were among millions unable to leave the enclave.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Daily Telegraph <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2024\/03\/08\/humza-yousaf-gave-250k-gaza-despite-official-advice\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">reported on Saturday<!-- --><\/a> that Mr Yousaf was being accused of overriding officials&#8217; recommendations to give Unicef, a different UN agency, between \u00a3100,000 and \u00a3200,000.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In a series of posts on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Mr Yousaf said the story was an &#8220;Islamophobic attack&#8221; and an attempt to link him to terrorism. <!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He said: &#8220;Most of my political life, I&#8217;ve battled insinuations from sections of the media desperate to link me to terrorism despite campaigning my whole life against it.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;The latest smear from the Telegraph is just a continuation of these Islamaphobic attacks.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The first minister added: &#8220;Due to my faith &amp; race, there will always be those, particularly on the far-right, who will desperately try to &#8220;prove&#8221; my loyalties lie elsewhere. That I am a fifth columnist in the only country I call home, the country I love and the country I have the privilege of leading.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;For the Telegraph to give oxygen to these smears is depressing.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr, who sits on Holyrood&#8217;s standards committee, had earlier claimed that the first minister &#8220;may very well have broken the (Scottish ministerial) code&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Scottish government said the money was allocated to United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East in response to a flash appeal for emergency aid as more than a million Palestinians in Gaza faced displacement amid the escalating conflict.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Yousaf&#8217;s parents-in-law left the region on 3 November 2023.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Telegraph story claimed Mr Yousaf told officials that, since he was about to meet senior UNRWA delegates in Edinburgh, &#8220;we should just announce an extra \u00a3250k to them&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It is claimed that went against their proposed advice that the money should go to Unicef for water programmes. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Scottish government stated that the decision had been taken following advice from officials.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Yousaf said: &#8220;To be clear, the Scottish government gave money to Gaza, like virtually every government in the West, because of the unarguable humanitarian catastrophe that has unfolded there.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">UNRWA has since been at the centre of controversy surrounding Israeli accusations that members of its staff were involved in the 7 October attacks by Hamas that triggered the fighting.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Several countries, including the UK, have announced a pause in support for the relief agency while an investigation takes place after the allegations emerged in January.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However, those accusations only became known several weeks after the Scottish government funding announcement had been made.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Stephen Kerr had claimed to the Telegraph that the funding decision suggested the first minister was &#8220;prepared to bend the rules&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He also said there was a &#8220;clear conflict of interest&#8221; in aid money being provided to UNRWA.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Israel&#8217;s military launched an air and ground campaign in the Gaza Strip after Hamas&#8217;s attacks on Israel on 7 October, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 253 others were taken hostage.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">More than 30,800 people have been killed in Gaza since then, the territory&#8217;s Hamas-run health ministry says.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The conflict has created a growing humanitarian crisis, and the UN has warned that famine in Gaza is &#8220;almost inevitable&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn0d2wnlek2o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scotland&#8217;s first minister Humza Yousaf has described accusations that he may have had a conflict of interest in sending funding to Gaza as an &#8220;outrageous smear&#8221; and &#8220;far right conspiracy&#8221;.
