It&#8217;s a message from the European countries that they&#8217;re showing support, that Greenland is not for sale, and for the Kingdom of Denmark,&#8221; says Arnakkuluk Jo Kleist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;These last months have created some questions about what allies we need, and also about what allies do we need to strengthen cooperation with,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">France&#8217;s president is the first high-profile leader to be invited by Greenland&#8217;s new prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen. They are both wearing thick khaki coats\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/><span class=\"sc-d1200759-2 gwFzuU\">Jim Watson\/Pool via Reuters<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-536eff7b-0 FPsqq\">US Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance board Air Force Two after touring the US military&#8217;s Pituffik Space Base in Greenland<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It also highlights a shift, as Greenland&#8217;s leaders consolidate relations with Denmark and the EU, &#8220;because we have to have allies in these problems,&#8221; says Kaj Kleist, alluding to US pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;I think it&#8217;s a good time for Macron to come through here,&#8221; Kleist adds. &#8220;They can talk about defence of the Arctic before the big NATO meetings\u2026 And hear what we are looking for, in terms of cooperation and investment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">However, opposition leader Pele Broberg thinks Greenland should have hosted bilateral talks with France alone. &#8220;&#8221;We welcome any world leader, anytime,&#8221; he says &#8220;Unfortunately, it doesn&#8217;t seem like a visit for Greenland this time. It looks like a visit for Denmark.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Relations between the US and Denmark have grown increasingly fractious. <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cr525e49m2do\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">US Vice President JD Vance scolded the Nordic country<\/a> for underinvesting in the territory&#8217;s security during his recent trip to an American military base in the far north of Greenland. Last month Denmark&#8217;s foreign minister <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c0eley5gy8wo\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">summoned the US ambassador<\/a> in Copenhagen, following a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/greenland-spying-us-intelligence-809c4ef2?mod=hp_lead_pos3\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">report<\/a> in the Wall Street Journal alleging that US spy agencies were told to focus efforts on Greenland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Then, at a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hegseth-greenland-signal-congress-295b03478d985678c4f2bf2eb5b513ba\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">congressional hearing<\/a> on Thursday, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth appeared to suggest under tense questioning that the Pentagon had prepared &#8220;contingency&#8221; plans for taking Greenland by force &#8220;if necessary&#8221;. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Denmark, however, has treaded cautiously. Last week its parliament green lit a controversial bill <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/denmark-united-states-military-bases-greenland-749f68105ff6452ebfeb7ab2cbc282b7\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">allowing US troops to be stationed on Danish soil<\/a>, and is spending another $1.5bn (\u00a31.1bn) to boost Greenland&#8217;s defence. That heightened military presence was on show this weekend as a Danish naval frigate sailed around Nuuk Fjord and helicopters circled over the town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Denmark has been reluctant to make this shift from having a very transatlantic security strategy to a more European strategy,&#8221; assesses Gad, but that&#8217;s changed in recent months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">With rising tensions and increased competition between global powers in the Arctic, the EU is also stepping up its role.
