Up to 100 stores are at risk of closure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The \u00a31 promise was Poundland&#8217;s &#8220;most compelling proposition&#8221;, says Howard Lake, a retail consultant at Kantar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Removing this identity alienated its core shopper base.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The company clearly agreed. After it raised some prices from \u00a31 in 2017, earlier this year it said it was returning to its roots, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/cost-of-living\/poundland-returns-1-roots-after-30719544\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">increasing the number of products<\/a> it offered that cost \u00a31 or less from 1,500 to 2,400, almost half its range.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-f98b1ad2-0 eOFjmw\">Small towns<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Poundland has 825 stores in the UK, with around 16,000 staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Many of those shops are former Woolworths or Wilko branches, which it hoovered up after the two brands collapsed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Poundland became the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrocer.co.uk\/analysis-and-features\/who-took-the-old-woolworths-stores\/355005.article\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">biggest occupant<\/a> of ex-Woolworths stores after the retailer went into administration in 2009, taking on 93 of its stores, more than 10% of the Woolworths estate. In September 2023 it <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-66789546\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">took over the leases<\/a> of 71 former Wilko stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Often, these stores were in the kinds of small towns where other large retailers do not have a presence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;They might have had a Woolworths, a bank and a charity shop,&#8221; says Jonathan de Mello, a retail analyst and the founder of JDM Retail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Elizabeth Gray loves going into her local Poundland in Bangor, Northern Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Recently, she found a pair of small ceramic houses in the store, which were a copy of a design she had seen at Zara. &#8220;We don&#8217;t have a Zara near where I live,&#8221; On the homewares side are Home Bargains and B&amp;M. And on the clothing side are Shein and Temu, the cheap Chinese exporters which have enjoyed a surge in popularity among British shoppers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ultimately, says Lake, consumers found these other offers &#8220;far more attractive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Poundland told the BBC: &#8220;Our missteps have been well documented and those include the execution of Pepco-sourced clothing and general merchandise product ranges in a way that didn&#8217;t fully align with UK &amp; Ireland customers&#8217; expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;We&#8217;re looking forward to having the opportunity to put those missteps right as we put our recovery plan in place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Shoppers like Elinor Martin in Sutton Coldfield hope the company succeeds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">She uses Poundland to pick up snacks for her sons&#8217; packed lunches, stationery and birthday cards for school, plus shampoo, shower gel and cleaning products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">She says she would miss her local branch if it were to close. &#8220;I can get things I need at Poundland.
