This was a difficult but necessary decision to ensure our networks remain secure and protected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The council said no data had been compromised by the attempted attack.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-737179d2-0 erjHHi\">New passwords <\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Exams began on Friday 25 April with key dates in the coming week, including the Higher maths exam on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Pupils were told they could access their personal revision materials by going to their schools on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A member of staff then issued them with a new password, while <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburgh.gov.uk\/targetedphishingattack\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">an online help page<\/a> has been set up by the council.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Spear-phishing usually differs from typical phishing attacks by being more focused, as opposed to the quantity of targets a usual phishing message will be sent to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Messages in spear-phishing can be more personalised, in an attempt to trick the victim into believing it is from a genuine contact.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Tech companies like Twitter, now X, have <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-53607374\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">been attacked via spear-phishing<\/a> in the past. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Students in Edinburgh use council-provided iPads, as part of the local authority&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/digitaleducationteam.com\/empowered-learning\/\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">Empowered Learning<\/a> programme. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-737179d2-0 erjHHi\">Second attack<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">West Lothian Council had <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp8v836jr30o\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">to resort to contingency measures<\/a> to keep schools open  earlier this week after the local authority&#8217;s education network was attacked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">A spokesperson for the council said there was no evidence any personal or sensitive data had been accessed in the attack. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ransomware is a type of malware which prevents someone from accessing a device and the data stored on it, usually by encrypting files, according to the National Cyber Security Centre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cy8d0x0yxe1o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getty Images Parents have been sent texts telling them that students&#8217; passwords have been reset as a precaution Pupils in Edinburgh were cut off from revision resources ahead of key exam dates after an attempted cyber attack on the council&#8217;s education department.
