They are both smiling at the camera. \" class=\"sc-4abb68ca-0 ldLcJe\"\/><span class=\"sc-4abb68ca-2 kkAKIJ\">David Maxwell<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"sc-1b6a1475-0 feHvAW\">Brian Duncan was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society in recognition of his breeding work<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">In 2022, Brian was awarded the Victoria Medal of Honour by the Royal Horticultural Society in recognition of his breeding work. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Only 63 horticulturists can hold it at any given time in commemoration of the years of Queen Victoria&#8217;s reign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Narcissus Gardeners&#8217; Corner began its life from a cross between two very successful flowers &#8211; Amazing Grace and Cape Point &#8211; and has proved itself by growing on in both Northern Ireland and Holland.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a beautifully-formed daffodil with pure white wide petals and a delightful pink- rimmed corona,&#8221; said Mr Duncan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-737179d2-0 erjHHi\">Looking to the future<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Gardeners&#8217; Corner presenter David Maxwell said the new addition was a &#8220;great honour&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Our programme and its gardening stories and advice is an established part of the BBC Radio Ulster schedule. And we know how much it&#8217;s valued by BBC listeners,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The bulbs of this new variety will be harvested in the summer and distributed in the autumn to a number of public gardens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Planting bulbs of any sort is about looking to the future. It&#8217;s about hopefulness, expectation and renewal,&#8221; said David. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;We&#8217;re reminded about all of these things each spring, making it even more appropriate that the season and its possibilities will be heralded by a new daffodil named after Gardeners&#8217; Corner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-737179d2-0 erjHHi\">Daffodils in Ireland<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-3b6b161a-0 dEGcKf\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">There is a long heritage of <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-northern-ireland-68866435\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">daffodil breeding on the island of Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Causeway Sunset, Irish Charm, Finn McCool, Paddy&#8217;s Legacy are all varieties of Irish daffodils.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Last year, growers from around the world <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-northern-ireland-68866435\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">visited Northern Ireland <\/a>to enjoy the wonderful spring flowers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Gardeners&#8217; Corner was first broadcast in June 1985.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It succeeded a weekly series called Ulster Garden which began in April 1954.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The flower will be officially launched on this weekend&#8217;s programme. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">You can listen on BBC Sounds <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b007b5wg\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ce801pxe3epo\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Maxwell Brian Duncan with David Maxwell in BBC Radio Ulster studios They inspired the poet William Wordsworth, and now a new variety of daffodil has been inspired by a popular BBC gardening show.
