{"id":27641,"date":"2025-04-24T17:52:55","date_gmt":"2025-04-24T17:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/cyber-attack-causes-further-chaos-for-shoppers-at-ms\/"},"modified":"2025-04-24T17:52:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T17:52:55","slug":"cyber-attack-causes-further-chaos-for-shoppers-at-ms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.godj.com\/news\/cyber-attack-causes-further-chaos-for-shoppers-at-ms\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber attack causes further chaos for shoppers at M&#038;S"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">M&amp;S shoppers are facing further frustration at the checkout as the company struggles to recover from a cyber attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Customers began reporting problems on the weekend, with the retailer confirming on Tuesday it was dealing with a &#8220;cyber incident.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It told the BBC on Wednesday that customer-facing systems were back to normal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">However, it has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/corporate.marksandspencer.com\/media\/press-releases\/cyber-incident-further-update\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">since confirmed<\/a> it has been forced to take some systems offline as part of its &#8220;proactive management of the incident.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">It said it had stopped processing contactless payments, had paused the collection of click and collect orders in stores, and warned of delays to online order deliveries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Contactless payments have since been restored, the BBC has been told, however this has been questioned by some customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">BBC staff have described witnessing the impact of the suspension of contactless payments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">At Euston station, in London, shop staff were seen shouting that it was cash only as the payments system was down.  Disruption was also seen in Glasgow, and a store at Edinburgh Haymarket seemingly closed early.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">M&amp;S says it had made the &#8220;decision to move some of our processes offline to protect our colleagues, partners, suppliers and our business&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">But stores remain open and customers could &#8220;continue to shop on our website and our app&#8221;, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">But confusion has reigned on social media amongst M&amp;S customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The firm has responded to some posts on X (formerly Twitter) in the past few hours advising customers contactless payments can be taken in stores <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">However, this has been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/marksandspencer\/status\/1915390912336740473\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">contradicted by some individuals<\/a>, with one saying: &#8220;That is wrong &#8211; only chip and pin or cash is working&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/marksandspencer\/status\/1915414857920221430\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">M&amp;S also told click &amp; collect<\/a> customers not to travel to a store &#8220;until they have received their &#8216;Ready To Collect&#8217; email&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Some customers also questioned that, with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Haley0826371095\/status\/1915355272119226566\" class=\"sc-f9178328-0 bGFWdi\">one person saying<\/a> after receiving their email, &#8220;store staff said they are unable to retrieve the item&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The company has declined to provide detail on the nature of the attack, but moving systems offline is often a response to ransomware attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">On Tuesday the firm said in a notice to investors that it had engaged &#8220;external cyber security experts to assist with investigating and managing the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;We are taking actions to further protect our network and ensure we can continue to maintain customer service,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The company said it also reported the incident to the National Cyber Security Centre which told the BBC it was &#8220;working with Marks and Spencer to support their response to a cyber incident&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The National Crime Agency told the BBC its officers were &#8220;working alongside partners in the NCSC to better understand the incident and support the company&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cly802x1jz5o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>M&amp;S shoppers are facing further frustration at the checkout as the company struggles to recover from a cyber attack.
