At least six people have been taken to hospital after a shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee.<\/p>\n
One person was taken into custody after the shooting at the university’s Student Union building on Thursday, according to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner.<\/p>\n
President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the incident at the start of a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House, calling it “a shame, a horrible thing”.<\/p>\n
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said: “Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
One of the victims taken to hospital is in a critical condition, according to the Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare facility, with five others in a serious condition.<\/p>\n
The university has cancelled all classes until at least Friday, and sports events were also cancelled for the weekend.<\/p>\n
Police responded to an active shooter call at around midday local time, the university said.<\/p>\n
It then sent an alert warning to students and those on campus to “seek shelter and await further instructions”.<\/p>\n
“One of my classmates got an alert on her phone and announced it to the rest of the class,” Ava Arenado told CBS News Miami.<\/p>\n
